Belgian state appeals ruling on overcrowding in Ghent prison

The Belgian State has appealed a ruling regarding overcrowding in Ghent prison, which mandated a reduction in occupancy to 110% of actual capacity. The court gave the State six months to comply, threatening a daily fine of 500 euros per inmate if not met. The Flemish Bar Association initiated the case, citing ongoing issues of inhumane treatment and overcrowding, with occupancy rates reported as high as 190%. The appeal will be reviewed by the Ghent Court of Appeal in December.
