The government submitted the wealth tax's spare tire, the exit tax.

The Hungarian government has proposed a law to tax assets moved abroad to avoid wealth tax, known as an 'exit tax'. This tax targets individuals with assets exceeding 500 million HUF or ownership stakes over 250 million HUF. It applies to those who have been tax residents in Hungary for at least five of the last ten years. Individuals would owe personal income tax on unrealized gains from shares, securities, and cryptocurrencies when changing their tax residency. If moving to another EU or EEA country, tax payment can be deferred until the asset is sold or transferred. The proposal aims to align with EU practices and combat tax avoidance.
