Tolls on highways "are paid by all Portuguese"

The government has ruled out removing toll gantries from highways exempted from tolls since 2025, following a proposal by the PS and Chega. Local populations and municipalities have requested the removal, but it would incur costs and hinder traffic counting necessary for compensating toll operators. The annual loss of €400 million in toll revenue affects all taxpayers, as emphasized by Miguel Pinto Luz. The government is negotiating compensation with the Beira Interior concession for lost toll revenues. Additionally, an audit of the EN125 road in the Algarve has been requested due to ongoing legal disputes, with potential government intervention depending on the audit's findings.
