Box shopping is not necessarily advantageous now that a new system is coming
The upcoming changes in wealth taxation in the Netherlands are causing uncertainty among investors regarding the strategy of 'box hopping'. Many are considering moving their investments to private limited companies (bv) to avoid the current box 3 taxation system, which imposes a flat rate on deemed returns. However, experts warn that the benefits of this strategy may diminish with the introduction of a capital gains tax, which would be levied only upon sale. This could lead to a higher overall tax burden compared to the current system. Additionally, the costs and privacy concerns associated with establishing a bv may deter many from pursuing this option. As the government continues to adjust tax rates and thresholds, alternative strategies, such as shifting wealth to box 1 for pension savings, are also being explored.
