Brazil, arrest ordered for former Uruguayan military officer convicted in Italy
The Brazilian Superior Court of Justice has ordered the execution of a life sentence for former Uruguayan colonel Pedro Antonio Narbondo, known as "El Burro," convicted in Italy for murders during Operation Condor. Narbondo, who resides in Brazil and holds Brazilian citizenship, cannot be extradited. The court recognized the validity of the Italian sentence but limited the punishment to 30 years, the maximum allowed in Brazil. The ruling indicates that Brazilian amnesty laws do not prevent the recognition of foreign convictions, although some judges disagreed, citing potential amnesty implications.
