Bridge over E17 in Waregem too heavily damaged for renovation: bridge must be replaced
The bridge over the E17 in Waregem is too damaged for renovation and will be replaced. The agency responsible for roads has confirmed that the bridge, built in 1972, requires a complete replacement due to extensive damage discovered during renovation work. The existing cables that provide stability are partially rusted, making repairs impractical. A new bridge is expected to last 100 years, compared to only 10 to 20 years for a renovated one. Until the new bridge is constructed, the route will remain closed to motorized traffic, although measures will be taken to allow cyclists and pedestrians to use it starting in November. The design phase for the new bridge will begin next year, with hopes to start construction shortly after.
