Bruges seeks additional bike parking due to new Belgian road code: "We already have a large shortage"

Brugge is exploring options for additional bicycle parking due to a new Belgian road code effective June 1, 2027, which mandates a minimum of 1.5 meters of clear passage on sidewalks. This regulation poses challenges in the narrow streets of Brugge, where there is already a shortage of bike parking. Mayor Dirk De fauw highlighted the need for more bike stalls, especially in busy areas like the Markt. The city is considering replacing some car parking spaces with bike stalls and may also look into indoor bike parking near shopping streets. Additionally, some outdoor terraces may need to be removed to comply with the new space requirements. Enforcement of the new rules will depend on community tolerance and may involve police intervention if complaints arise.
