The legendary boxer engine of Subaru is bidding farewell, the lineup is completely transforming in Europe
Subaru plans to phase out internal combustion engine vehicles in Europe by the end of 2027, transitioning to electric models by 2028. This change will eliminate the iconic boxer engine from European markets, although it will remain available in Japan and the U.S. The decision is driven by stricter emissions regulations and low sales figures in Europe. The first model to be discontinued will be the 169-horsepower boxer engine Outback in late 2026, followed by the Impreza, Crosstrek, and Forester in 2027. They will be replaced by three electric models developed in collaboration with Toyota: the Uncharted compact SUV, the Solterra crossover, and the e-Outback. Subaru is also developing its own electric platform, expected to debut in 2029, potentially featuring a 510-horsepower all-wheel-drive variant.
