Budget 2027: MPs reject the tax on sugary products proposed by the government
On October 22, deputies rejected a proposed tax on sugary processed products aimed at reducing chronic diseases linked to sugar consumption. The measure faced strong opposition from industry representatives and was removed by a vote of 86 to 58. The government intended to impose this tax on high-sugar items like pastries and cereals, with the goal of encouraging manufacturers to lower sugar levels. Critics argued the tax would not effectively change consumer behavior and would burden households financially. The expected revenue from the tax was around 300 million euros. Additionally, amendments to mandate Nutri-Score labeling and to ban tobacco sales to those born after 2009 were also rejected, while a proposal to lower tobacco taxes was adopted.
