Burnout can affect up to 75% of internal medicine doctors
A review published in Acta Médica Portuguesa indicates that burnout affects up to 75% of internal medicine doctors, impacting patient care quality and safety. The study analyzed 22 articles from 2000 to 2024, revealing a prevalence range of 17% to 75%. It highlights that burnout is particularly high in the first year of residency and in specific specialties, driven by organizational conditions. A 2023 survey showed that 84.8% of respondents worked overtime, averaging 52.8 hours weekly, with excessive workload cited as a major psychological stressor. The article calls for integrated interventions focusing on institutional measures, proper scheduling, and psychological support to mitigate burnout risks. It emphasizes the need for further research to understand burnout's evolution and effectiveness of interventions.
