Former central bank president detained
Former Hungarian central bank president Gyorgy Matolcsy has been taken to the Central Investigation Prosecutor's Office amid allegations of economic fraud and document forgery. His lawyer stated that Matolcsy is suspected of causing significant financial losses. The Hungarian National Bank reported suspicions of mismanagement and fraud related to five bank-owned properties, leading to the submission of 30,000 pages of documents to the investigative committee. Matolcsy served as the bank's president from 2013 to 2025 during Viktor Orban's administration and previously held the position of Minister of Economy.
