Porto Chamber rejects PS proposal on police
The Porto City Council rejected a PS proposal urging the government and police to avoid violent interventions during housing protests. The PS criticized recent police actions as disproportionate and harmful to human rights. The proposal also expressed solidarity with a CMTV reporter assaulted by police. Mayor Pedro Duarte opposed the proposal, citing a previous recommendation already approved. Chega's Miguel Corte-Real agreed with the need for police accountability but disagreed with the council's role in evaluating it. Jorge Sobrado, an independent councilor, voted against the PS proposal, emphasizing the need to avoid politicizing housing protests. Manuel Pizarro from PS expressed disappointment over the rejection, highlighting the seriousness of recent events.
