Canada and the European Union defend alliance against the protectionist drift of the USA

Canada and the European Union emphasized strengthening their alliance in response to the U.S. shift towards protectionism. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and EU's High Representative Kaja Kallas discussed the fundamental changes in global trade dynamics due to the U.S. moving away from multilateralism. Anand highlighted the importance of building alliances based on trust and reliability, aiming to double trade with non-U.S. countries in the next decade. Kallas noted that the new alliance is not against anyone but focuses on identifying reliable partners. They also addressed the Ukraine war, stressing the need for increased pressure on Russia and support for Ukraine, including a long-term partnership agreement between Canada and Ukraine.
