Central Sophia reduced does not convince all opponents
The revised solar plant project Sophia in Beira Baixa has reduced its capacity by one-third to 573 MW, yet remains one of Portugal's largest solar projects. It will cover over 1,000 hectares across Penamacor and Idanha-a-Nova, with 250 hectares for solar panels and a new 22-kilometer power line. Public participation for the project ends soon, with notable opposition from pianist Maria João Pires, who encourages public engagement against it. Environmental group Zero acknowledges the project's downsizing but still calls for a negative opinion, citing cumulative effects with other renewable projects in the area. The project promoter, Lightsource BP, claims to have engaged with the community to address concerns and proposes compensation measures.
