Centre-left opposition says platform by November, primaries in February
Italy's centre-left opposition plans to create an electoral platform by November and hold primaries in February to select a leader against Premier Giorgia Meloni. Key figures from the Democratic Party, Five Star Movement, and Green and Left Alliance will collaborate on this initiative. The primaries will likely see a contest between Elly Schlein and Giuseppe Conte. Currently, the centre-left coalition, including Italia Viva, is polling slightly ahead of Meloni's right-wing alliance. Meloni has dismissed the idea of an alliance with far-right politician Roberto Vannacci. The next general election is anticipated in spring or early summer 2027, although Meloni aims to complete her five-year term.
