China authorizes new autonomous driving tests

China has authorized Xpeng to operate autonomous taxis in Guangzhou and granted Volkswagen a license for level 3 autonomous vehicle testing in Hefei. Xpeng's Yoyo taxis will undergo real-world performance evaluations, while Volkswagen's joint venture with JAC Automobile Group will test vehicles that require driver intervention. The competition in autonomous vehicle technology is intensifying, with Chinese companies leading in commercial operations. Xpeng is also exploring international expansion despite facing financial challenges, as the global autonomous taxi market is projected to reach $1 trillion by 2040. Advances in AI and clearer regulations are expected to facilitate large-scale commercial operations by 2030.
