China may launch its fourth aircraft carrier in 2027, satellite images indicate

China is expected to launch its fourth aircraft carrier, the Type 004, potentially its first nuclear-powered vessel, by 2027, according to satellite images analyzed by U.S. researchers. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) noted that the construction phase resembles that of the Fujian carrier before its launch. Built in Dalian, the Type 004 may be launched on August 1, 2027, coinciding with the centenary of the People's Liberation Army. The hull currently measures about 322 meters long and could reach 339 meters, similar to U.S. Navy carriers. Experts suggest that while a 2027 launch is feasible, operational readiness may take an additional two to three years. The carrier will feature an electromagnetic aircraft launch system, enhancing its operational capabilities. This development aligns with China's strategy to expand military projection in the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean, with plans to build six more carriers by 2035, raising its fleet to nine.
