China has punished nearly eight million people since the start of Xi's anti-corruption campaign

Since the start of Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign in 2012, nearly eight million individuals have been punished in China, including 963 high-ranking officials. The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection reported that 8.1 million cases were opened, resulting in sanctions for 7.92 million people. The campaign aims to address various disciplinary violations, not solely criminal corruption. Despite progress, challenges remain in eradicating corruption. New party guidelines emphasize investigating collusion between officials and businesspeople, as well as enhancing oversight mechanisms. Analysts suggest the campaign has also helped Xi consolidate power by removing potential rivals. Recent data shows 680,000 individuals were punished in the first nine months of this year, including 105 senior officials.
