China has for the first time more elderly people than minors compared to the working population

In 2025, China recorded more individuals aged 65 and older than those under 15 for the first time, according to the 2026 Statistical Yearbook. The elderly population reached 223.65 million, representing 15.9% of the total, while children under 15 numbered 212.76 million, or 15.1%. The elderly dependency ratio rose to 23.1%, surpassing the 22% for minors. This demographic shift follows a prolonged decline in birth rates, with only 7.92 million births in 2025, marking a historic low. Despite government efforts to encourage births and support the elderly, trends indicate that by 2035, over 400 million people will be aged 60 or older, increasing pressure on the workforce and pension systems.
