How the new support for the purchase of electric cars will work

The Portuguese government announced support for vulnerable families and microenterprises to purchase electric vehicles, with up to 80% funding for over 20,000 vehicles. The initiative aims to combat energy poverty and promote sustainable mobility, focusing on families with low incomes and microenterprises. Eligible families include those receiving social energy tariffs and those with incomes significantly below the median. The program will provide a maximum of 15,000 euros per vehicle, with additional funds for scrapping old combustion cars. The government plans to open applications in early 2027, pending final approval from the European Commission. Microenterprises will receive a larger share of funding, with specific requirements for vehicle scrappage.
