Living conditions of the Roma community improve in the EU
The living conditions of Roma communities in the EU have improved from 2023 to 2025, particularly in health and education access, according to a European Commission report. In Portugal, initiatives include training for health professionals on structural inequalities affecting Roma life expectancy. EU-wide, severe material deprivation among Roma decreased from 62% in 2016 to 37% in 2024, while the percentage of young Roma engaged in work, education, or training rose from 38% to 53%. Housing deprivation also fell from 61% to 47%, and employment among Roma increased from 43% to 54%. The report emphasizes the need for member states to enhance their national strategic frameworks for Roma inclusion, with continued support from the European Social Fund. The next implementation report is expected in 2028.
