Constitutionalist rejects violation of the right to protest
Tiago Duarte, a constitutional law expert, stated that police actions during housing crisis protests did not violate the right to protest as outlined in the Portuguese Constitution. He emphasized that while the right to protest is fundamental, it must be balanced with other rights. Duarte argued that protesters had ample opportunity to express their views and that legal restrictions on the duration of protests do not infringe on this right. He criticized some protesters for abusing their rights and highlighted the need for police actions to be proportional. Duarte also suggested that the law governing protests should be revised for clarity but does not believe it contradicts the Constitution.
