COP17 ends with commitment to "accelerate" efforts to protect nature
The 17th Conference of the Parties on Biodiversity (COP17) concluded in Yerevan, Armenia, with a commitment from nearly 200 countries to accelerate efforts to meet biodiversity targets by 2030. The agreement includes a global review of the Kunming-Montreal Agreement, which sets 23 goals, such as protecting 30% of land and oceans. However, implementation is significantly delayed. Discussions highlighted the need to address harmful subsidies, particularly in oil exploration. The financial responsibilities for achieving these targets remain contentious, with calls for emerging economies to contribute to funding. The next COP will be held in Ecuador in 2028.
