COP31: "It is essential that those who aspire to govern our country present their vision for the French energy future"
France has largely decarbonized its electricity but still relies on oil and gas for housing, transport, and industry. This paradox will be a key topic in the 2027 presidential election. The upcoming COP31 in Turkey aims to prioritize electrification, increasing electricity's share in global energy consumption from 20% to 35% by 2035. The third energy programming (PPE3) adopted in February plans to raise electricity's share in France from 27% in 2023 to 38% by 2035, while reducing fossil fuel reliance from 58% to 29%. This requires public policies and investments to support electrification. The PPE3 allows for a simplified revision in 2027, giving future leaders significant influence over the country's energy future, highlighting the need for a national debate on this geopolitical and economic issue.
