Could Europe’s autumn of discontent threaten the survival of the EU? | Catherine De Vries
Europe is experiencing widespread protests driven by public dissatisfaction with government performance on issues like housing and wages. Upcoming elections in Spain, France, and other countries reflect the urgency of addressing this discontent. National leaders face external pressures, such as security concerns and economic competition, complicating cooperation. The EU's strength lies in its ability to adapt and provide effective sovereignty, despite internal disagreements. However, political instability could hinder progress, as seen in budget negotiations. Young Europeans largely support the EU, presenting both an opportunity and a challenge for leaders to translate this support into meaningful change. The EU must balance institutional preservation with addressing citizens' needs to avoid escalating discontent.
