Cuauhtémoc Cardenas, emblem of the left and of the democratic transition in Mexico, has died

Cuauhtémoc Cardenas, a prominent figure in Mexico's left and a symbol of democratic transition, passed away at 92 on October 28 in Mexico City. He was a senator, governor of Michoacán, and the first elected mayor of Mexico City, challenging the long-standing authoritarian regime of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). In 1987, he left the PRI after unsuccessful attempts to democratize it, despite being the son of a former PRI president. Cardenas unified leftist factions in the 1988 presidential campaign against the PRI's Carlos Salinas, advocating for democracy and prioritizing the poor, despite facing an uneven electoral landscape.
