What is "smiling depression"? Here’s why patients suffer in silence

The term "smiling depression" describes individuals who appear happy while feeling deep sadness and hopelessness. Searches for this term have increased by 50% over five years, despite it not being an official diagnosis. The WHO reports that 322 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Many hide their feelings due to fear of judgment or being a burden, which can worsen their isolation and delay seeking help. Symptoms can be subtle, including loss of pleasure in activities, withdrawal from social interactions, and physical fatigue. Clinical psychologist Prof. Barney Dunn advises talking to a trusted person and consulting a doctor if these symptoms are present.
