Signs in Handwriting May Indicate Dementia

A study from the University of Évora explored the link between handwriting and cognitive decline, particularly in individuals diagnosed with cognitive impairments. Researchers analyzed the handwriting of 58 elderly participants, 38 of whom had cognitive issues. While basic handwriting tasks showed no significant differences, dictation tasks revealed that those with cognitive impairments took longer and used more strokes. This suggests that handwriting analysis could serve as a practical, non-invasive method for monitoring cognitive decline, potentially integrating into routine medical care. However, the researchers emphasize the need for larger, long-term studies to validate these findings.
