Dendermonde imposes a gathering ban and targeted identity checks until January 3

The mayor of Dendermonde, Lien Dierick, has implemented two temporary measures to enhance safety and livability in the city. These include a gathering ban on Oude Vest and increased police powers, effective until January 3. The measures were prompted by rising reports of disturbances and a general feeling of insecurity among residents. The gathering ban prohibits groups of more than four people from congregating near a night shop during late hours. Additionally, police are authorized to conduct targeted identity checks and security searches in various locations, including near schools and the train station. The aim is to address the increasing presence of knives and weapons in the community, as stated by the local police chief, Patrick Feys.
