Detained in 2022 in Ukraine. Russia releases 74-year-old American

Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old American, was released from Russian detention after being accused of fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine. His release followed a direct request from former President Donald Trump. Hubbard was captured in eastern Ukraine during the Russian invasion in 2022 and faced what his family and the U.S. State Department described as fabricated charges. After his release, he returned to the U.S. to reunite with family and participate in a government program for ex-detainees. The U.S. special envoy, Steve Witkoff, thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for the release, which occurred amid ongoing peace discussions. Hubbard's son expressed gratitude for the efforts made for his father's release, highlighting the humanitarian aspect of the situation. At least five other Americans remain detained in Russia, and the U.S. government continues to advocate for their release.
