Diabesity: designing a non-pharmacological system to treat diabetes and obesity in mice
An implantable electronic device shows promise as a non-pharmacological solution for obesity and type 2 diabetes by removing excess glucose through electrocatalysis. In preclinical trials with mice, normal blood glucose levels were restored within an hour, and a daily stimulation maintained glycemic control for six weeks. The device, named ECHO, uses a gold-platinum catalyst to convert circulating glucose into gluconate, which is excreted by the kidneys. While results are promising, the device's efficacy and safety in humans remain unproven, and further research is needed to address potential long-term effects and metabolic consequences.
