Diabetics lament that the co-payment remains at 15%

The Associação Protetora dos Diabéticos de Portugal criticized the government's decision to subsidize only 15% of obesity medications, arguing that this short-term approach fails to address the broader health implications of obesity. They emphasized that treating obesity involves managing over 200 associated diseases and preventing future complications. The new policy requires patients to be part of a specific hospital program to qualify for subsidies, which the APDP believes creates inequities in access to treatment. They also highlighted the potential for significant health improvements by preventing type 2 diabetes, which is closely linked to obesity. Family doctors expressed concerns about the limitations imposed by the government, suggesting that the approach could overwhelm hospital consultations and restrict access to necessary care.
