Public employees: waiting times for Tfr reduced, but only for some

The Italian government plans to allocate €3.1 billion over ten years to expedite severance payments for public employees retiring due to age or service. This reform aims to reduce waiting times for severance payments, which have been delayed since the financial crisis of 2010-11. However, the changes will only apply to old-age pensions and will be implemented gradually, with the first phase starting in 2028. The new rules will also increase the threshold for immediate severance payments, eventually aligning public sector practices with those of the private sector by 2035. The constitutional court will review these changes on January 14, 2027, to determine their legality and sufficiency in addressing previous court concerns about the existing payment delays.
