Portuguese school directors are the most dissatisfied with salaries in the OECD

Portuguese school directors report the highest dissatisfaction with salaries among 44 OECD countries, with only 12.7% expressing satisfaction. This dissatisfaction has worsened since 2018, contrasting with a general increase in satisfaction across the OECD. Despite salary concerns, 99% of Portuguese directors are satisfied with their work. The report highlights the increasing age of directors and challenges in attracting new candidates. Education Minister Fernando Alexandre plans to introduce a new Director Statute to address these issues, promising salary increases and more management autonomy. Directors also report a lack of specific training for leadership roles and face significant obstacles such as inadequate infrastructure and resources.
