Polish DNA is going abroad, and patients are unaware. NIK raises the alarm
A recent audit by NIK revealed significant irregularities in the handling of biological materials and patient information within Polish healthcare. Many DNA samples are sent abroad without patients' knowledge, raising concerns about data privacy under GDPR. The audit highlighted that foreign subcontractors often create their own databases from these samples, which could expose hereditary health risks. Additionally, the availability of genetic counseling has decreased, with waiting times for urgent cases increasing dramatically. NIK noted the absence of comprehensive legislation on genetic testing, despite proposals dating back to 2013 for improved oversight and quality standards.
