The parliament has decided: the investigation into the wealth of politicians can begin
The Hungarian Parliament approved a law to investigate the wealth accumulation of politicians and their immediate family members, aiming to ensure it aligns with their declared income. The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) will conduct these investigations, which will cover a period of twenty years. Critics argue that the scope of the law is too narrow, excluding many potential subjects. The law mandates monthly public reporting of investigations and findings, including names of officials with significant tax deficiencies. The investigations will begin within thirty days of the law's enactment, focusing on former officials from recent parliamentary terms. The estimated cost of these investigations could reach 3 billion HUF over five years, requiring new procedural mechanisms and additional staff.
