Until now, it mainly attacked cattle. A patient infected with the Shamonda virus has died.

French health authorities reported the first human case of the Shamonda virus, typically affecting livestock, resulting in the patient's death. However, they assured that there is currently no threat to public health. The Shamonda virus, an orthobunyavirus, primarily targets livestock, especially cattle, and is transmitted by insects, mainly flies. The French government noted that it was previously believed the virus could not infect humans. The most likely scenario is that the patient contracted the virus in eastern France, where it circulated among animals during spring and summer. The virus was first identified in Nigeria in the mid-1960s and has been sporadically detected in animals in Africa and Japan, with recent spread in several European countries.
