German WWII submarine found that had disappeared due to a typo
A German submarine from World War II, U-672, has been discovered in the English Channel, 82 years after it went missing due to a typing error. Divers from Plymouth found it 32 kilometers off the Devon coast at a depth of 70 meters. The submarine was damaged in July 1944 by the British warship HMS Balfour and was abandoned by its crew after a depth charge caused it to leak. The crew of 52 was rescued the next day, but the submarine's exact location remained a mystery until this summer when divers mistakenly identified it as a sunken steamship from 1917. The discovery revealed a paperwork error that mislocated the submarine's sinking coordinates, making it one of the few remaining mysteries of German U-boats in the Channel.
