Ebola. It is unlikely that the Bundibugyo strain will reach Portugal

Portuguese doctor Jaime Nina stated that while the current Ebola strain affecting Central Africa could theoretically reach Portugal, it is unlikely. He noted that a significant Portuguese community exists in the Congo, but they are primarily in the western region. Portugal has a system in place for handling potential cases, with designated hospitals for adults and children. Ebola is a zoonotic virus primarily transmitted through contact with infected animals, particularly bats. The virus can also be transmitted after death, especially during burial practices. The Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing a major outbreak of the Bundibugyo variant, with over 10,000 infections and nearly 5,000 deaths reported. Nina emphasized the need to address other health crises that may be overlooked during such outbreaks.
