Ebola in the DRC: a clinical trial of the Tumaini vaccine has begun, according to the WHO
The first clinical trial for an Ebola vaccine in response to the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has commenced. The trial, named Tumaini, aims to evaluate the effectiveness of vaccine candidates against the Bundibugyo strain of the virus. Existing vaccine Ervebo, approved for the Zaire strain, will also be tested for cross-protection. The outbreak has resulted in over 9,700 cases and more than 4,600 deaths. The trial will eventually include two specific Bundibugyo vaccine candidates, one developed by Oxford University and another by Moderna. The DRC declared its 17th Ebola outbreak in May, with neighboring Uganda reporting cases linked to the DRC.
