ECB President Christine Lagarde to step down early in February 2027

Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, will resign on February 7, 2027, ahead of her term's end in October. Her early departure allows European leaders to appoint a new ECB chief before the upcoming French presidential elections. Lagarde has ruled out running for the presidency and is speculated to lead the World Economic Forum. Since taking office in November 2019, she has navigated challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic and inflation due to geopolitical tensions. European Council President Antonio Costa commended her leadership and announced that the search for her successor will begin immediately.
