Eeklo refuses construction of a school for special education on the site of the Sint-Jan psychiatric hospital
Eeklo has denied permission for a new special education school on the grounds of Sint-Jan psychiatric hospital due to local protests. The Triangel group sought a new location for 32 students with emotional and behavioral issues, as their current building is dilapidated. However, the proposal faced significant opposition, with 59 objections and a petition signed by 183 residents. Concerns include loss of forest area, increased traffic, and potential water management issues. The local council shares these concerns and believes alternative locations have not been adequately explored. They plan to meet with the school to discuss other options, acknowledging the need for quality special education.
