One year after the start: vacant social housing in Hasselt provides temporary accommodation for 18 households

One year after launching a pilot project, Hasselt has temporarily housed 18 households in vacant social housing. The initiative, in collaboration with Wonen in Limburg, aims to utilize properties awaiting renovation or demolition for those in urgent need. The project has proven successful, providing shelter for diverse groups, including families in crisis and homeless youth. Hasselt plans to expand the program with an additional 18 properties soon. However, strict quality controls ensure only suitable homes are used, as many vacant units are outdated. The city emphasizes the need for quicker renovations to reduce vacancy times.
