First human infection of the Shamonda virus: patient died in France
The Shamonda virus, previously only found in livestock, has been detected in a human for the first time in France, where a patient recently died. French health authorities suspect a link between the virus and the patient's death. The virus, which circulates among livestock, particularly cattle, has been known since the 1960s but had not been documented in humans until now. The patient, who had a severely weakened immune system, likely contracted the virus through a mosquito bite in eastern France. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control is monitoring the situation, but authorities assert there is no health risk to the general population.
