An average winter is increasingly insufficient for Lake Balaton to recharge.
A recent analysis highlights that average winter precipitation is no longer sufficient to counteract summer water shortages at Lake Balaton. Research indicates that the lake's water level is critically low, nearing historical minimums. Climate change exacerbates evaporation rates, leading to a persistent water deficit despite slight increases in annual rainfall. The study reveals that over half of the years since 2000 have shown negative water balance in the watershed. Additionally, urban development along the lake has intensified environmental concerns, prompting calls for stronger conservation measures. Experts warn that without intervention, artificial water supplementation may be necessary by 2040 due to prolonged droughts. The situation at Lake Velence, which has experienced complete drying in the past, further emphasizes the urgency of addressing these challenges.
