The European Commission postpones the adoption of national legislation plans limiting children's use of social media by a year
The European Commission has postponed for 12 months the adoption of national legislation plans that conflict with EU regulations on children's social media use. This decision aims to prevent fragmentation of the internal market and ensure effective implementation of unified EU child protection rules. Austria and several other member states, including Slovenia and Italy, have proposed similar legislation. The Commission emphasizes the importance of collaboration with member states to find harmonized solutions. Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the risks associated with young people's internet habits in her September speech, proposing strict limits on social media use for children under 15, with nearly a complete ban for those under 13.
