A prisoner convicted of murder has taken legal action against the Australian ministry because they cannot eat a cream that appears disgusting.

An Australian inmate serving a life sentence for murder lost a legal battle to lift the ban on Vegemite consumption in prisons. Andre McKechnie argued that the ban infringed on his cultural rights as an Australian. However, authorities stated that the strong-smelling spread could be used to hide contraband or brew alcohol. The Supreme Court judge dismissed McKechnie's claim, emphasizing that his cultural rights are primarily limited by his imprisonment. McKechnie contended that the ban violated laws requiring prisons to provide food that supports inmates' health and well-being, but he failed to prove this. The Vegemite ban is also enforced in prisons across Queensland, South Australia, and Tasmania.
