Consumers in Central Europe have fewer food chains to choose from
In Central Europe, the food retail market is increasingly dominated by a few major chains, following Tesco's exit from the Czech Republic. The market is expected to be controlled by three large multinational groups, with Ahold Delhaize's market share potentially rising to 26-28% in the Czech Republic. In Slovakia, the top five brands could capture 75-80% of the market. In Hungary and Poland, the largest players hold a combined share of 60-70%, while Romania's share is around 55-60%. The trend indicates a rise in mergers and acquisitions in the FMCG sector, driven by the need for economies of scale and technological investments. Discount chains are also gaining ground, utilizing standardized product offerings to streamline operations.
