Economist on the doctors' salary bill: It's just a band-aid for one problem

The proposed law on medical salaries and working hours has faced significant scrutiny in parliament, leading to its referral back to committee after amendments. The discussion highlights the complexity of the issue, particularly following a scandal involving a doctor earning 1.6 million PLN during his specialization. Economist Anna Gołębicka pointed out the stark salary disparities among doctors, with top earners making 170,000 PLN monthly compared to a median of 17,000 PLN. She criticized the proposed law as a temporary fix rather than a comprehensive solution, emphasizing the need for systemic reforms in healthcare financing and the role of family doctors. Gołębicka also noted that the Ministry of Health bears responsibility for the funding issues in primary healthcare, urging for a fundamental change in financial management to improve service quality.
