The Government lowers the requirements to install new data centers
The Spanish government has revised regulations for data centers, now applying only to those with a capacity of 10 MW or more. This change reduces the number of affected facilities and aims to ensure that new data centers primarily use renewable energy. The minimum duration for power purchase agreements has been shortened, and a transitional regime allows for more flexible compliance. Environmental requirements remain stringent, particularly regarding water consumption and energy efficiency. Additionally, data sovereignty regulations are reinforced, ensuring sensitive citizen data remains within the EU. Non-compliance may lead to penalties, including loss of network access.
